DRY SAWDUST VS WOOD SHAVING
Dry sawdust is the preferred bedding for dairy farmers due to its high absorbency, which keeps barns dry and reduces bacterial growth and mastitis risk in cows. It provides comfortable bedding for proper rest, maintains hygiene by reducing ammonia buildup, and is easy to handle, contributing to better cow health, milk quality, and working conditions.
We conducted independent tests to compare the absorption rates of sawdust versus wood shavings. Here are the results:

Frequently Asked Questions
Why sawdust and not shavings?
We’ve done an independent lab test and it has shown to be 83% more absorbent than store-bought kiln-dried shavings. Our sawdust not only absorbs more but it also absorbs faster. In a first 5 minutes sawdust is able to absorb 45 times its weight vs 25 times for wood shavings.
Why in totes?
Totes offer economic advantages over 40lb bags, reducing labor and plastic usage. They enable outdoor storage, even in harsh Canadian weather for up to 7 months, eliminating the need for extra indoor space. Choose our totes for cost savings and operational flexibility in storing sawdust. Ecostrat is your ideal choice.
Why in bulk?
Bulk delivery (145 cubic yards) is the most economical way to purchase sawdust from Ecostrat. With no need for bags and reduced handling, it offers significant cost savings. Customers must have sufficient storage capacity to benefit from these savings.
Where do we bag our product?
We bag our product in the central Ontario region. We carefully source our sawdust from mills all over Ontario and ensure that it is dry and free of contaminants.
Importance of Dry Bedding
Maintaining clean and dry bedding plays a pivotal role in thwarting the proliferation of mastitis-causing pathogens, detrimental to a cow’s well-being and capable of elevating somatic cell counts. By creating an environment inhospitable to bacterial growth—where food, warmth, and moisture are limited—dry bedding not only curbs bacterial propagation but also prolongs the lifespan of the bedding material. In addition, it ensures the cow’s hygiene and cleanliness.
Bedding comprised of adequately deep layers of sand entices the cow to lie down and rest, effectively reducing the risk of knee injuries during the reclining process. This practice lessens material compaction, thus minimizing the likelihood of chapped teats or bacterial contact. This is particularly vital given that cows should ideally recline for approximately 14 hours each day to optimize milk production.
The connection between bedding and its management with overall cow comfort, health, and milk production is undeniable. Regular maintenance of free stalls is pivotal in preserving the cleanliness and comfort of the cows. A weekly replacement of bedding is recommended, with organic bedding materials necessitating more frequent renewal.
Equally important, thorough cleaning of alleys should occur at least twice daily to prevent the transport of soiled sand and manure back into the stall environment. Beyond fostering cleaner and healthier cows, a well-executed bedding management strategy can yield superior milk quality characterized by reduced somatic cell counts, ultimately boosting profitability for dairy producers.
